Taijiquan (also written Tai Chi Chuan, or simply Tai Chi) is a form of exercise,
but it is also much more than that. It is the Chinese path to physical, mental,
and spiritual fitness.
The art of Taijiquan originated in China around 500 A.D. and people from all
walks of life practice it today.
Although it can be considered an internal martial art, Tai Chi is most frequently
practiced in a non-aggressive, therapeutic way. The aspect of Tai Chi we are
most familiar with is a series of slow movements which are combined with
breathing and mental concentration to complete a continuous, smooth-flowing
sequence or Form.
Although not physically strenuous, Tai Chi gives the whole body a thorough
workout, improves balance and coordination, increases flexibility and
suppleness of the muscles, and promotes relaxation and clarity of mind. Tai Chi
practice is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.
There are 5 major styles: Chen, Yang (the most popular style today), Wu, Hao
and Sun.
What is Taijiquan?
Qigong (also written Chi Kung) is one of the oldest Chinese forms of exercise,
believed to have originated more than 3,000 years ago. Like Tai Chi, Qigong
helps prevent disease and heals the body and mind through the combination
of focused concentration with simple movements and balanced breathing. The
movements are easy to learn and to practice and suitable for people of all
ages and abilities.
Regular Qigong practice energizes the body, while relaxing the mind. There
are many different types of Qigong; some are done without movement, others
include gentle, repetitive movements.
The Health Qigong sets approved by the Chinese Health Qigong Association
(CHQA) and promoted by the British Health Qigong Association (BHQA): Ba
Duan Jin (Eight Treasures), Liu Zi Jue (Six Healing Sounds), Yi Jin Jing (Muscle
and Tendon Strenghtening Exercises), and Wu Qin Xi (Five Animal Exercises)
can be traced back more than 1,000 years.
What is Qigong?
Tai Chi Chuan (Taijiquan) and Chi Kung (Qigong) are ancient Chinese arts
practiced by millions of people of all ages. Regular practice has been proven to
promote the physical, psychological and emotional health of all people,
regardless of their age or physical ability.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which is over 2,000 years old, believes that
there are meridians or channels which travel through the body carrying vital
energy. Illnesses occur when this internal energy, called Chi or Qi, is weak,
unbalanced or failing to flow correctly.
By performing gentle exercises in coordination with relaxed breathing and focus
of the mind, Tai Chi, and more directly Qigong, promote the smooth flow of Chi
through the energy channels.
Tai Chi and Qigong help to relax and calm the mind, while gently toning muscles,
improving balance and posture, boosting circulation and reducing stress.
Practitioners also believe it to promote longevity and to delay the signs of aging.
In the last decades, an enormous number of scientific papers on the long-term
health benefits of practising Tai Chi and Qigong have been published around the
World. The participants in these studies experienced improved health and quality
of life.
